Mathematical Modeling of Public Health Challenges |
Mathematical Modeling of Public Health Challenges Felicia Magpantay Associate Professor Department of Mathematics and Statistics
Mathematical modeling is a powerful tool for studying complex systems. Recently we have seen many of its applications in designing public health strategies during a pandemic. We will discuss some examples from history in which an evolutionary model was able to give us new insights into a public health challenge. We will end with some open research problems. |
BIOL 1101 | 2:30pm |
Why Care About Human Extinction? |
What’s so bad about human extinction? Owen Clifton Teaching Fellow and PhD Candidate Department of Philosophy
Human extinction is likely to come about eventually. The universe probably won’t go on forever, after all. Yet many think it would be a terrible thing if human extinction came about sooner than it must. In this lecture, we will discuss what, if anything, justifies this thought. Specific questions to be considered include: Who, if anyone, would premature human extinction harm? Who might it benefit? Should we want to create as many more human beings as we can? |
BIOL 1102 | 10:00am |
Thinking Through Sport and Technology |
Thinking through Sport and Technology Dr. Courtney Szto Assistant Professor School of Kinesiology and Health Studies
What counts as technology? What is the purpose of technology? What are the ethics of technology when applied to sport? In this mini-lecture, we'll discuss the blurry line between technology as progress versus enhancement and some of the implications that are unique to the world of sports. |
BIOL 1102 | 11:00am |
Understanding Work |
Understanding Work Glenda Fisk Associate Professor and Undergraduate Chair Employment Relations Studies
The employment landscape is in constant flux; as we have moved from a manufacturing, to service, to knowledge-based economy, the challenges and opportunities facing workers and organizations have never been greater. In a post-COVID era, remote and hybrid work, employee well-being, diversity and inclusion, and disruptive technologies have all accelerated the need for evidence-based practice in the fields of Labour Relations and Human Resources. Nevertheless, in light of these new challenges, employers still want to know answers to classic questions such as: How do we entice individuals to apply for jobs that are notoriously difficult? How do we choose between two highly qualified job applicants? How do we ensure people are treated fairly throughout the hiring process? In this short lecture, these real-world challenges will be presented to the audience. We will subsequently discuss these issues, highlighting how the study of Employment Relations helps address real-world organizational problems while simultaneously developing students’ marketable, work-related knowledge, skills and abilities. |
BIOL 1102 | 12:00pm |
Global Development Studies in the Real World |
Global Development Studies in the Real World Marcus Taylor Department Head and Professor Global Development Studies
Why would farmers in south India reject a new approach to growing rice that they all agree increases yield and saves water? Building from this real-world paradox, Dr. Marcus Taylor introduces the field of global development studies and demonstrates how academic research at Queen’s informs public policy around climate change. Dr. Taylor shows how a failure by policymakers to adequately engage with social and cultural factors can undermine otherwise valuable projects aimed at promoting rural climate change adaptation and food security. |
BIOL 1102 | 1:00pm |
Translating Alien Encounters: What Star Trek Tells Us About Language and Culture on Earth |
Translating Alien Encounters: What Star Trek Tells Us About Language and Culture on Earth Sarah Shulist Associate Professor Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures
Science fiction stories like Star Trek are extremely popular ways of imagining human adventures across the galaxy, where encountering new alien species is a regular occurrence. In these encounters, some kind of translation mechanism provides a convenient plot device enabling communication to happen almost immediately and with only rare failures. Thinking about these stories and the way they depict translation, however, provides an interesting window on how we think about language, cultural differences, and the role that technology can or can’t play in making connections between diverse groups of people. These topics are examples of themes that can be studied in the Linguistics and LLCU (Languages, Literatures and Cultures) Majors. |
