Beginning in September during National Postdoc Appreciation Week (September 18 to 22, 2023), the FREE nine-month program features ten workshops and eight catered lunches with Queen’s mentors PLUS free professional headshots. To fit busy schedules, the sessions run between 1.5 to 2 hours, and the lunches are an hour long (for further details, see the menu below). The program ends with a celebratory certificate-granting reception for participants, their families, mentors, facilitators, and the community! Workshops stem from five Core Competencies based on the National Postdoctoral Association’s recommendations:

Program Requirements

Attending all ten workshops is required to complete the certificate, along with eight catered networking lunches. Some sessions have pre-work that must be finished before the workshop, and some asynchronous learning is necessary.

Space is limited, so please register for the program only if you can attend all sessions. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Indigenization – Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Accessibility, Anti-Racism (I-EDIAA) as a Researcher, Educator, and Professional (Tues. Oct. 10 from 2:30 to 3:00 p.m., Ontario Hall Room 206) PLUS asynchronous training to be completed by May 2024
  • Indigenous Storytelling - Thurs. April 11 from 9:30-11:00 a.m., in Biosciences 2109

  • Effective Presentation Skills (Thurs. Dec. 14 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Gordon Hall Room 324)
  • Writing for The Conversation & Media Relations (Wed. Feb. 14 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Gordon Hall Room 302)

  • Program Orientation & Your Personal Brand (Wed. Sept. 20 from 9:30 to 1:00 p.m. Gordon Hall Room 302) including the first catered lunch
  • Career Exploration (Fri. Sept. 22 from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. Gordon Hall Room 302)
  • Grant Writing (Thurs. Mar. 14 from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. Ontario Hall Room 206)

  • Crafting Your Teaching Dossier (Wed. Jan. 17 from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. Ontario Hall, Room 209)

  • Project Management (Thurs. Nov.16 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Gordon Hall Room 324)
  • Establishing & Managing Your Lab (Tues. April 23, from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m., Ellis Hall Room 319)

  • From October to April (inclusive), on the third Thursday of the month from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in Gordon Hall Room 401 EXCEPT in December when the lunch will be held on the 14th
  • Participants are encouraged to suggest topics for discussion, which may include follow-up on workshop material

  • Gather with your colleagues, mentors, supervisors, and family to celebrate your achievement and receive your certificate! May 2024 date TBD
