Workplace Communication

Overview

​​This course introduces students to the critical interpersonal competencies and communication skills required in contemporary workplaces. Students will gain and apply knowledge of foundational theories in communication and organizational behavior to develop their professional written, oral and interpersonal skills. This course will also demonstrate the critical importance of these theories and skills to the broader field of employment relations, including human resource management, labour relations and conflict resolution.​ 

Learning Outcomes

After successfully completing this course, students will be able to

  1. ​​Demonstrate effective and appropriate verbal and written communication skills in professional workplace settings​
  2. ​​Identify barriers to effective communication and strategies to overcome those barriers​
  3. ​​Apply knowledge of interpersonal behaviours to work effectively in teams and to manage various workplace situations​
  4. ​​Describe strategies for building and maintaining professional relationships​
  5. ​​Explain the role and importance of communication and interpersonal skills to promote inclusion and equity in diverse workplaces​
  6. ​​Recognize problematic situations related to equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace/classroom.​
  7. ​​Identify appropriate bystander methods to address difficult conversations.​
