Winter 2022 - Woolgathering

 

 

 

A dozen sheep interrupt my meditations, coming through an uphill gate. The lead ewe marches purposefully across the field, but the others halt at the sight of me. I advance, and the stalled ewes retreat. I know just enough about sheep to know that a lone sheep is an unhappy sheep. Sure enough, the uphill ewe stamps her foot with an angry snort and reverses and thunders past to rejoin her friends. She leaves no wool in her wake, but on the gate I find a prize, a substantial handful of charcoal fleece from a black sheep …
