There’s definitely a numbing
(all the shoes by the door are mine),
daily starvation followed by
nightly over-consumption – TV, snacks,
puzzles I never solve, the cats on my lap,
my warm connectors – all in an effort
to rock myself to sleep …

Louise Carson has published three collections of poetry, The Truck Driver Treated for Shock, Dog Poems, and A Clearing. Her poems were selected for Best Canadian Poetry in 2013, 2021, and 2024. She also writes mysteries and historical fiction. Her latest novels are The Cat Looked Back and Third Circle. She lives in Saint-Lazare, Quebec, with her daughter, pets, and gardens.
