Winter 2023 - The Oxford Story

 

Each speaking engagement had been the same: great expectations, disheartening results. I should have known, or at least suspected, that a hefty, research-heavy book about a long-dead playwright who wrote in a nearly dead language would be a very hard sell.

But then I was invited to speak at Oxford University. Oxford University! I was thrilled. A talk at such a prestigious place felt like a vital stage in the book’s journey – and a new journey of connection with my parents and my own past …

Beth Kaplan is the author of a biography, two memoirs, and a guide to writing memoir that is the textbook for her courses at the University of Toronto.
