I spend a lot of time on the streets and buses and in the coffee shops and markets of Vancouver, where I see people I don’t know up close and from a distance. Sometimes I think they are the reason I go downtown so much. They remind me of what Thomas Bernhard said about reading, how he thought skimming some books is just as valuable as reading others entirely and repeatedly …
