A man wanted to be something else. A sorrel horse,
nickering in a summer field at sunrise. A glissando played
by Art Tatum or, when he was feeling melancholic, Martha
Argerich. A ham-on-rye sandwich! As hard as he wished and
hoped, however, he remained himself. Was there a lesson in
this? he wondered. He felt certain that there was.
