Students admitted to a graduate program in philosophy are offered competitive funding packages that cover tuition fees and include funds for living expenses. Many students receive more than the starting offer indicated in their acceptance letters because of success in competitions for internal and external awards and fellowships. Students can also apply to receive additional funds to present work at conferences and workshops.
Internal Awards and Fellowships
A number of internal awards and fellowships have been established by benefactors of Queen's University to support graduate students, consideration for which is given to students with high academic qualifications. Most internal awards are administered by the Fellowship Committee of the School of Graduate Studies through an annual competition to which departments/programs nominate candidates. Awards specific to particular fields of study are administered by the relevant departments/programs. A list and descriptions of these internal awards and fellowships can be found on the School of Graduate Studies’ Awards and Financial Assistance page.
External Awards and Fellowships
Graduate philosophy students are encouraged to apply for external funding, principally from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and the Ontario Graduate Scholarship program. Ph.D. students are required to apply for external funding to remain eligible for internal funding. Current Ph.D. students have won a number of Ontario Graduate Scholarships, SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships and Scholarships, and a SSHRC Vanier Scholarship. Recent winners of SSHRC Graduate Scholarships have also won SSHRC Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements to support visiting studies at universities such as Princeton and Cambridge.
More information about these and other external awards and fellowships can be found on the School of Graduate Studies’ Awards and Financial Assistance page.
Teaching Assistantships
Students admitted to a graduate program in philosophy are typically offered paid Teaching Assistantships as part of their funding packages. TA assignments are made by the Graduate Coordinator. Ph.D. candidates are encouraged to apply to take full responsibility for courses as Teaching Fellows, typically in their fourth or fifth years.
