Stephen Scribner is the Director, Intellectual Property at Queen’s Partnerships and Innovation (QPI). Stephen has a Ph.D. (Biology) from Queen’s University and a B.Sc. H. (Biology) from Carleton University. He is also a qualified electronics technologist, and, prior to studying biology, he worked in the Space Electronics Lab at the Communications Research Centre in Ottawa. He started working in patents at an Ottawa law firm in 1996 and joined the technology transfer office at Queen’s in 1997.
Stephen has been a registered patent agent in Canada and the United States since 1998 and has extensive experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications for inventions in a broad range of fields including life sciences, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, electronics, and information technology.
As Director, Stephen oversees the patent team and advises on the university’s intellectual property policies and procedures. Stephen serves the Queen’s community and works closely with start-ups and licensees of university’s intellectual property. He also helps the local entrepreneurial community through government sponsored programs (such as the Scale-Up Platform supported by FedDev Ontario), providing guidance on intellectual property matters and developing and overseeing world-wide patent strategies tailored to their commercialization objectives.
Stephen is a fellow of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC) and a member of the College of Patent Agents & Trademark Agents (CPATA).
