Course-Embedded Green Industry Project Opportunities

There are more than 15 courses across Queen's University committed to integrating net-zero focused projects, case studies, prototype development and challenges into their curriculum. For each course, the QVENT project team is looking for one or more industry and community partners to be involved to facilitate student learning, while supporting partners in solving their organizations net-zero related challenges. Courses are led by Queen's faculty members and students will work closely with project partners as individuals, in teams, or as a class to support the challenge provided by the project partners.

APSC 401 - Interdisciplinary Projects

Submission date: November 30, 2023

Project start Date: January 2024

Faculty: Smith Engineering 

Description: This project is designed for students to provide industry partners with creative solutions to an environmental-related issue and is an opportunity for organizations to work with students in the Smith Engineering. Industry partners will be asked to provide details about a strategic problem they are facing in one of the following areas: Clean energy solutions, achieving net zero in the community, reducing environmental impact, and making renewable energy more accessible. Students will work in teams to develop solutions.

ASCX 200 - Collaborative Problem Solving

Submission date: August 1, 2023

Project start Date: September 2023

Description: This project is designed for students to provide industry partners with creative solutions to an environmental-related issue and is an opportunity for organizations to work with students in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Industry partners will be asked to provide details about a strategic problem they are facing in one of the following areas: Clean energy solutions, achieving net zero in the community, reducing environmental impact, and making renewable energy more accessible.

ASCX 300 - Implementing Strategies

Submission date: August 31, 2023

Project start Date: January 2024

Faculty: Faculty of Arts and Science 

Description: This project is a continuation of Collaborative Problem Solving (ASCX 200). Building on ASCX 200, students will craft their solution into a prototype and final pitch. This project is designed for students to provide industry partners with creative solutions to an environmental-related issue and is an opportunity for organizations to work with students in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Industry partners participating in ASCX 200 will be asked to participate in ASCX 300.

ASCX 400 - Interdisciplinary Projects (Standing Whale)

Submission date: August 1, 2023

Project start Date: September 2023

Faculty: Faculty of Arts & Science

Description: Students will undertake projects relating to the Standing Whale art installation. The industry partner will provide details regarding a problem or challenge facing an arts, cultural services, media, or educational organization in the areas of clean energy solutions, achieving net zero in the community, reducing our environmental impact, making renewable energy more accessible. The industry partner will work with students in the Faculty of Arts and Science and receive a solution to their problem or challenge.

Description: This project is designed for students to provide industry partners with creative solutions to an environmental-related issue and is an opportunity for organizations to work with students in the Smith Engineering. Industry partners will be asked to provide details about a strategic problem they are facing in one of the following areas: Clean energy solutions, achieving net zero in the community, reducing environmental impact, and making renewable energy more accessible. Students will work in teams to develop solutions.

CHEE 410- Engineering Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Submission date: December 1, 2023

Description: The Venture Project: Business Models and Path to Commercialization is designed for students to work in teams to provide a solution to a problem or challenge. Industry partners will be asked to provide details for a strategic problem or challenge focused on the optimization of clean energy systems/net zero. This will provide a valuable opportunity for students to apply their classroom learning and for industry partners to engage top student talent.

CIVL 460 - Civil Engineering Design and Practice IV

Submission date: August 31, 2023

Project start Date: September 2023

Faculty: Smith Engineering 

Description: The Civil Engineering Design and Practice IV project will provide students working in teams a chance to undertake the designing of a structure or system to meet a specified need subject to environmental constraints. Industry partners will provide students with a project outline, data and feedback. This is an opportunity for organizations to engage top student talent from the Civil Engineering department.

COMM 101 – Strategy Study

Submission date: October 2023

Project start date: January 2024

Faculty: Smith School of Business

Description:  The Strategy Study project will provide students working in teams a chance to complete an analysis of a case with the industry partners being the focus of the case. Students will gain experience in analyzing a real-world situation and will develop an understanding of the fundamental elements of modern enterprise. Industry partners will gain access to different approaches to a strategic opportunity and engage Commerce students.

COMM 231/631 – Fundamentals of Marketing

Submission date: October 2023

Project start date: January 2024

Faculty: Smith School of Business

Description: Students work in teams to analyze a real-world marking situation and provide recommendations. Students will gain experience in the execution of a net zero policy in product development, pricing, integrated marketing communications and distribution management. Industry partners will gain access to different approaches and engage with students from multiple faculties

Comm306 - Social Impact Challenge

Submission date: July 31, 2023 or November 30, 2023

Project start Date: September 2023 or January 2024

Description: The Social Impact Challenge is an opportunity to offer a social impact challenge to students passionate about bringing about positive societal change. Throughout the semester, students will work in teams to conduct analysis and develop solutions to address a social impact challenge facing your organization.

COMM 401 - Business Corporate Strategy

Submission date: July 31, 2023

Description: The Strategy Study project will provide students working in teams a chance to complete an analysis of a case with the industry partners being the focus of the case. Students will gain experience in analyzing a real-world situation and making recommendations to assist an organization in securing or reinforcing competitive advantage. Industry partners will gain access to different approaches to a strategic opportunity and engage Commerce students.

ENPH 354 - Engineering Physics Design Project

Submission date: December 1, 2023

Project start Date: January 2024

Faculty: Smith Engineering 

Description: During the Engineering Physics Design Project, students will work in pairs to design, build and test a prototype device. The organizations most suitable for this project are those in the solar photovoltaic industry. This is an opportunity for organizations to engage top student talent and raise your organization's visibility at Queen's University.

MECH 460 – Capstone Design Project

Submission date: August 31, 2023

Project start Date: September 2023

Faculty: Smith Engineering

Description: Students in their final year work directly with clients in industry to help solve practical engineering problems. The capstone design project is a challenging design problem related to a real industrial application that is likely to be implemented. Projects do not need to be pure mechanical design - they can include analysis, and process development.

MINE 431 - Life-Cycle Assessment for Green Technologies

Submission date: August 15, 2023

Project start Date: October 2023

Faculty: Smith Engineering 

Description: The Life-Cycle Carbon Footprint Analysis is a project designed for students to estimate the life-cycle carbon footprint of a specific product and identify ways to reduce the carbon footprint. The industry partner is suggested to present their business case and provide primary data for their products. Organizations will receive high-quality analysis, recommendations, and creative solutions to a sustainability problem as well as engage top talent from Smith Engineering.

PHYS 350 - General Physics Laboratory

Submission date: August 31, 2023

Project start date: September 2023 or January 2024

Faculty: Faculty of Arts and Science

Description:  Students will take on an experimental physicist's full range of tasks: they will choose research topics, create models, design experiments, take data, perform analysis, and present their findings. Students will perform heat, optics, electron physics, quantum physics, and radioactivity experiments. The primary learning objective for the course is to deliver a wide range of experimental research skills by implementing. both team projects and supporting activities.
