In a world where technology continues to revolutionize industries, young entrepreneurs like Abdul Karim Sessay are leading the way in transforming healthcare access for underserved communities. Sessay, an alumnus of the African Leadership University in Rwanda and Jim Leech Mastercard Foundation Fellowship co-founded Altruistech Health Solutions. Altruistech is an offline mobile application that bridges the gap between healthcare professionals, hospitals, patients, and community health workers in Kenya. Sessay’s commitment to addressing low staffing issues in the country is fuelling positive change, made possible by the Jim Leech Mastercard Foundation Fellowship on Entrepreneurship.

Sessay's passion for improving healthcare access in Kenya inspired him to create Altruistech Health Solutions. The platform aims to promote efficiency in the health sector by connecting licenced mental health professionals to patients through a mobile app. By doing so, Altruistech not only improves healthcare delivery but also facilitates income generation for unemployed mental health professionals. Sessay's entrepreneurial journey took a significant turn when he was accepted into the Jim Leech Mastercard Foundation Fellowship on Entrepreneurship. The program has proved to be a game-changer for him and his venture, changing his mindset and opening the door to new possibilities.

“I had one thought of entrepreneurship, solving problems and making money, but this fellowship showed me how to do it.” (Abdul Karim Sessay, 2023)

Sessay found the online content and guest speaker sessions on different topics the most beneficial. “I think this fellowship is what we need as aspiring entrepreneurs” (Abdul Karim Sessay, 2023). The diverse content on the online platform was both interesting and beneficial, exposing him to various perspectives, case studies, and best practices in the entrepreneurial world. Additionally, the guest speaker sessions featuring industry leaders and successful entrepreneurs have provided invaluable insights and inspiration for his journey.

Sessay joined the program with just an idea. Thanks to the Fellowship’s guidance and support, the concept has been rigorously validated with potential customers, confirming its relevance and potential impact. With newfound confidence, Sessay and his team are building the actual practical solution – a mobile application that empowers individuals and licenced therapists.

Currently, Altruistech Health Solutions is piloting and releasing two versions of their product to users and have over 100 active and testing users. Additionally, they have raised over $20,000 in grants, including winning the Fishbowl Challenge. Looking ahead, they are planning on releasing the most improved version of their product by the end of the month.

Abdul Karim Sessay's dedication to improving healthcare access directly aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 3 - Good Health and Wellbeing. By leveraging technology to connect mental health professionals with job opportunities and medical centres, Sessay is contributing to a healthier and more sustainable future for his country and the region.

Abdul Karim Sessay's journey as an entrepreneur, co-founder of Altruistech Health Solutions, and a recipient of the Jim Leech Mastercard Foundation Fellowship are truly inspiring. As he works towards his goal of scaling up his venture, it is evident that Abdul Karim Sessay is a remarkable example of how technology and entrepreneurship can transform lives and shape a brighter future for Africa.
