H&A Sustainability Advisory Committee

As a sub-group of Sustainable Queen’s, the Housing and Ancillary Services Sustainability Working Group supports a joint commitment to balance sustainability and fiscal accountability in all department policies, procedures and practice that supports Queen’s University Climate Action Plan and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Meetings are held the third Thursday of each month during the academic year and/or as required. Members of the Queen’s and Kingston communities are welcome to join the meetings as guests or observers. Please contact edhouse@queensu.ca to RSVP at least one week prior to the scheduled date if you are interested in attending a meeting. 

I. Purpose

To create a collaborative community throughout Housing and Ancillary Services in support of a joint commitment to balance sustainability and fiscal accountability in all department policies, procedures and practices that support Queen’s University Climate Action Plan and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Through collaboration with a broad range of campus stakeholders, the Committee serves as a consultative group, advising on decisions directly affecting operational best practices while leveraging new sustainability objectives and oversight of any/all available funding allocations.

II. Roles & Responsibilities

The committee shall:

  • Report and/or present results of the Housing and Ancillary Services Sustainability Framework
  • Engage in open dialog and collaboration.
  • Participate and lead in any operational follow up where suitable.
  • Collaborate with student and other campus groups.
  • Identify barriers and advocate for testing and implementing new initiatives.
  • Define shared practices, communication strategies and educational opportunities.
  • Identify reporting and measurement strategies.
  • Promote existing sustainability practices.
  • Organize outreach and awareness activities to enhance general sustainability knowledge.
  • Discuss annual goals and assess progress to ensure compliance with requirements to maintain Fair Trade Campus designation.  
  • Provide input on use of Cold Beverage Sustainability Fund, in partnership with Coca-Cola, providing input on best practices, post-secondary comparisons and review of other initiatives.

III. Duration of Membership Term

The membership term is one year for students and three years for staff members.

 IV. Subject Matter Experts

As required, the committee may call in subject matter experts to help inform discussions.

V. Sustainability Advisory Committee Membership

Includes up to 16 core members – plus ex-officio members and/or special guests as subject matter experts or representing specific areas of perspective related to our campus community.

Administrative support service for the committee is provided by the Office of the Executive Director, Housing & Ancillary Services.

VI. Meeting Frequency

Meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month during the academic year and/or as required.  Meetings will not be scheduled during exam periods or over the summer months.

Committee will meet six times per academic year, in late September, October, November and in late January, February and March.

*Student representatives will be compensated with a $100 honorarium per term.
