Today, Kingston Fire and Rescue officials conducted an inspection of the encampment area at Queen’s University and advised the university that the barricades that have been put in place in recent days by encampment participants must be removed, noting health and safety risks to individuals in the area.

As a result, late this afternoon Queen’s university maintenance staff began working to remove the barricades and other objects obstructing exit doors and fire exits. The tents are not affected by this work.

The university has installed moveable metal fencing that must remain open during the day, be free from anything being hung, displayed, or attached, and all exits are to be clearly marked. Crews will work to facilitate this moveable fencing once removal of the unsafe materials and any other impediments is complete.

The university respects and recognizes the right to free expression on campus. It takes the safety and security of everyone in the community extremely seriously and will act to ensure the safety of all persons on campus.
