During her time at Queen’s Christine Moon has been involved in a number of academic and student governance programs. As a result, she was recently named the 2023 recipient of the Margaret Hooey Governance Award.
The award, established in November 2018 by the estate of Margaret Hooey (LLD’02), the long-time secretary of Queen’s, is given to a student enrolled in any degree program at the university who has made an outstanding contribution to the good governance of the university through work with Senate or any committee of the Senate.
Moon, a student in the MD-PhD, Sociocultural Studies program in the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies (SKHS), definitely fits the bill.
She has extensive Senate committee service and has been engaged in Queen’s academic governance since 2018, with membership on the Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching Committee, the Senate Library Committee, the Senate Committee on Academic Procedures and the Senate Committee on Academic Development and Procedures.
“I believe that participating at the university – whether it is through Senate committees, the student union, student clubs, communities of care, and even the greater Kingston community – is a way for students to find community and meaning at Queen’s, outside of the classroom and research spheres,” Moon says.
She has also been very active in other aspects of student governance including the Society for Graduate and Professional Students (SGPS), as the Equity Officer for the Aesculapian Society, and the SKHS Graduate Student Council. She is a passionate advocate for I-EDIAA and has helped advise the Faculty of Health Sciences on how to reach equity-deserving students through a summer outreach program, while also helping organize a health and human rights conference.
Letters written in support of her nomination highlight dedication to the importance of governance and her commitment to the work required. She has continually shown herself to be dedicated in her preparation and participation in meetings, especially her work with Senate Committee on Academic Development and Procedures. Of note is Moon’s “willingness to engage in more than one committee at once and to continue in this important service work speaks highly to her abilities and interest in making significant contributions to Queen’s University.”
All students involved in the Senate and Senate committees are encouraged to apply for the award. The deadline is Feb. 1 each year. Learn more about the Margaret Hooey Governance Award.
