Continuing and distance students have a new means of acquiring and documenting excellent communications skills.

Continuing and Distance Studies (CDS) has developed an online Certificate in Academic Writing designed especially with distance students in mind.

“Queen’s has been serving continuing and distance students since 1889, and we continue to believe that this population deserves opportunities to achieve a Queen’s education,” says Brenda Ravenscroft, Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning), Faculty of Arts and Science. “The Certificate in Academic Writing offers distance students a chance to enhance their writing skills and for these skills to be certified and recognized by potential employers.”

The courses that make up the certificate are designed to strengthen writing capabilities in a variety of ways. After completing the certificate program, students will be better equipped to recognize and respond to the complexities of communicating in contemporary society, whether by using persuasive rhetoric to engage clearly and accurately with a wide range of audiences or by developing nuanced arguments based on effective analytical approaches.

The certificate consists of 12.0 units of degree-credit courses. Students can complete the new certificate program entirely online and at their own pace, like other CDS online degree programs. Visit the CDS website to learn more about the program.

The new certificate program joins the wide array of online learning opportunities offered by Queen’s University. There are more than 140 online courses open to everyone, with more being added all the time. Queen’s also offers online degree programs, including five in the Faculty of Arts and Science.
