The Government of Ontario has introduced new research security guidelines for researchers applying for Ontario research funding programs. The guidelines provide institutions and researchers with an overview of the research security requirements and processes expected from research projects funded by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities.
Additionally, the provincial government has released new and updated forms to support funding applications: an application attestation form and a revised mitigating economic and geopolitical risk checklist.
As part of the Vice-Principal (Research) portfolio, the Research Security team supports researchers in assessing and mitigating potential security risks in an ever-changing geopolitical environment. The Safeguarding your Research webpage provides the Queen’s community with important information and guidance, including sanctions imposed by the Ontario and Canadian governments on various foreign actors in response to grave breaches of international peace and security, gross and systematic human rights violations, or acts of significant corruption.
Canadian sanctions are imposed under three statutory regimes: United Nations Act, Special Economic Measures Act, and Justice for Victims of Corrupt Foreign Officials. They contain a broad range of prohibitions, some of which may impact research collaboration with foreign academics and institutions.
