Queen’s has begun the process of developing a plan to guide the evolution of student life space on campus by striking a new subcommittee of the Campus Planning Advisory Committee (CPAC).
The Student Life Space Plan Advisory Subcommittee (SLSPAS) will work over the next year to examine current student life space and recommend a vision for the future that builds upon the Campus Master Plan.
“Queen’s physical campus is an intrinsic component of how the university creates a dynamic and transformative student learning experience,” says Laeeque Daneshmend, Deputy Provost and chair of the SLSPAS. “The committee’s work will help ensure that current and future student life space promotes social and academic interaction within a multi-disciplinary learning environment, in line with the recommendations of the campus master plan.”
Student life space is a broad term for any place that facilitates out-of-classroom student and faculty interaction and sustains or enhances a holistic Queen’s experience. This can include many types of spaces, including: group study spaces, library space, cafés, student government space, club space, and student-run services.
Over the coming year the SLSPAS will consult widely across campus as it develops a student life space plan, expected to be completed in the fall of 2015. A progress report to the CPAC is expected in April 2015. The committee’s work will align closely with the Campus Master Plan, the Library and Archives Master Plan and the Academic Plan.
“The committee will reach out to students, staff and faculty over the coming months to seek their input on how student life space can evolve and further contribute to an inclusive, welcoming and supportive campus that promotes academic success and overall wellness,” says Deputy Provost Daneshmend.
