A quick roundup of Queen's Gaels teams and athletes in action over the weekend:

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

The Queen’s Gaels women’s lacrosse team capped off an undefeated season with an OUA Championship.

After finishing as the runners-up in 2017, the Gaels got their revenge as they earned their first OUA gold medal since 1999.

Queen's easily won its first two games against the McMaster Marauders and Toronto Varsity Blues in Peterborough, before the Gaels beat the Laurier Golden Hawks 11-4 in the gold medal game.

After finishing the regular season with a 14-0-1 record, the Gaels entered the tournament as the top-ranked team in the province.

Brittany Schwende had three goals in the championship game while Kiah Shanks, Annie Lloyd and Molly Fisher each had two. Alex Fenton and Jordan Kummer each tacked on a goal as well. Kiah Shanks took home the tournament finals MVP.

Rachel Mochulla, Jordan Kummer, Annie Lloyd, Brittany Schwende, Amelia Piccone and Kiah Shanks were named as OUA All-Stars.

WOMEN’S RUGBY

The No. 5 Queen’s Gaels women’s rugby team suffered a 39-14 loss to the No. 4 Guelph Gryphons in the OUA Championship game. It marks the second consecutive season where the Gaels fell to the Gryphons in the final.

The Gryphons controlled the pace of play early and charged out to a 17-0 lead by halftime. After the break the Gaels tried to get back in the game but the Gryphons responded with a pair of tries to make it 29-0. The Gaels then finally put up their first points as OUA All-Star Nadia Popov scored a try. OUA MVP Sophie de Goede nailed the conversion to make the game 29-7.

However, the Gaels weren't able to keep the momentum rolling as the Gryphons added another pair of scores to bring their lead to 39-7. 

de Goede tacked on a late try in the 76th minute as the Gaels finished with their second consecutive OUA silver medal.

MEN’S RUGBY

The Queen's Gaels men’s rugby team (8-0) defeated the McMaster Marauders (4-4) 83-0 at Nixon Field on Saturday during Homecoming completing an undefeated regular season for the second straight year.

As a bonus, Queen’s was also named the top fundraising post-secondary school for the CIBC Run for the Cure, thanks in large part to the rugby team’s efforts.

The Gaels thoroughly dominated from start to finish, opening up a 19-0 lead inside the first 15 minutes and never looking back. Queen's scrumhalf Dylan Young had one try and six conversions while Nick DeLallo added four tries.

Each year the team makes a significant contribution to breast cancer research by raising funds and participating in the Kingston CIBC Run for the Cure. This year the team raised over more than $31,000.

FOOTBALL

The Queen’s Gaels football team saw their season come to an end after a 27-22 loss to the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the Homecoming and Think Pink game on Saturday

In front of a near capacity crowd of 7,055 at Richardson Stadium, the visitors got out to a 14-0 lead in the second quarter. After a field goal from Nick Liberatore to get Queen’s on the board, the Gaels blocked a Gee-Gees punt and recovered the ball. They were only able to manage another field goal. After Ottawa tacked on a late field goal, Queen’s was down 17-6 at halftime.

Following the break Gaels quarterback Nate Hobbs connected with Matteo Del Brocco for a 71-yard gain down to the Ottawa 1-yard line. Hobbs then his ninth rushing touchdown of the season.

After Ottawa stretched the lead to 27-15, Hobbs hit Chris Osei-Kusi over the middle of the field for a 30-yard touchdown.

The Homecoming festivities saw the Tricolour Guard parade the field at halftime. Queen’s also partnered with the AMS ReUnion Street Festival and the Canadian Cancer Society for Think Pink Day as Gaels fans added pink to their Tricolour outfits. Donations were also accepted by the Canadian Cancer Society throughout the game.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

The Queen’s Gaels women’s hockey team (2-2-0-0) defeated the Windsor Lancers (0-4-0-0) 4-1 on Saturday, following a 4-1 loss to the No. 7 Western Mustangs (2-0-0-0) a day earlier.

Katrina Manoukarakis, Caroline DeBruin, Hailey Wilson, and Addi Halalday all scored in the second period to break the game open.

In London, Taylor Hicks opened the scoring on the powerplay in the second period, but it was all Mustangs after that.

MEN’S HOCKEY

The No. 5 Queen's Gaels (4-1-0) bested the No. 10 Brock Badgers (4-1-0) by a score of 3-1 on Saturday, bouncing back after a tough 7-1 loss to the Guelph Gryphons (2-1-2-2) a night earlier.

The Badgers got on the board in the first period but powerplay markers by Nevin Guy and Mason Kohn would put the Gaels ahead. Luke Bartolucci added the third goal while Justin Fazio made 44 stops to get the win.

On Friday Graeme Brown scored for the Gaels but Guelph scored four in the second period to put the game out of reach.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

The No. 10 Queen’s Gaels women’s soccer (8-2-5) tied the Carleton Ravens (6-3-6) in a scoreless draw and lost to 1-0 to the Ottawa Gee-Gees (14-1-1) as the regular season wrapped up on the weekend. However, the single point was enough to lock up the second seed in the OUA East.

As a result the Gaels earn a bye through the first round of the OUA playoffs and will get to host an OUA East semifinal game.

The Gaels put in a pair of good efforts but were unable to get on the scoreboard. A second-half goal gave the No. 3 Gee-Gees the win in the final regular season game.

MEN’S SOCCER

The Queen’s Gaels men’s soccer team (9-6-1) suffered a 4-0 road loss in their final game of the regular season against the No. 4 Carleton Ravens (13-1-1).

Despite the four goals, Alex Jones made 14 saves in a busy game for the goalkeeper

With the Gaels locking up the fourth seed in the OUA East they will face the fifth-seeded Nipissing Lakers (6-9-1) in the first round of the OUA Playoffs.
