Gaels rugby teams roll to big wins

A quick roundup of Queen's Gaels teams that were in action over the weekend:

WOMEN’S RUGBY

The Gaels (3-2) beat York (3-2) 55-5 on Friday in a preview of next weekend's OUA playoff game on Nixon Field. The result gives Queen's home field advantage in next weekend's game, which will be played on Homecoming Saturday.

Miranda Seifert scored five tries on the day along with singles from Pippi McKay, Sadie Stephenson, Lauren Murray and Holly MacDonald.

Nadia Popov was good on five conversions

MEN’S RUGBY

The Gaels (4-1-1) got on the board early en route to a 44-17 win over the Trent Excalibur (3-3) on Nixon Field on Friday.

Dylan Young put Queen’s on the board early with a pair of tries and a penalty goal to go up 13-0. Doug Scully and Nick DeLallo added a pair of tries each while Angus MacPhail had a single. Alex Colborne hit on three conversions.

FOOTBALL

The Queen's Gaels (2-4) were outgunned by the No .8 McMaster Marauders (5-1) 36-6 in Hamilton on Saturday.

The Marauders were first on the board with a first quarter field goal then made it 10-0 with a fumble recovery in the Gaels endzone. The home side then added 10 more points following a pair of interceptions and never looked back.

Kicker Nick Liberatore hit a pair of field goals later in the game for the Gaels' points.

MEN’S SOCCER

The Gaels (5-4-3) topped the No. 10 Varsity Blues (9-2-2) with a 4-2 victory in Toronto on Sunday.

The Gaels got goals from Tonko Bacelic, Andrew Martin, Patrick Van Belleghem and Brian Jimenez-Lopez to snap Toronto’s six-game win streak.

On Saturday, the Gaels fell 2-0 to the No. 2 Ryerson Rams (12-0) in Toronto.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

With her third multi-point game of the season, Brittany Almeida helped Queen's (8-3-1) top the Toronto Varsity Blues (5-7-1) on Sunday.

Queen's won the game with an offensive explosion that spanned 16 minutes in the second half. Almeida cracked the deadlock in the 56th minute and Rachel Radu doubled the lead 10 minutes later. Almeida then scored her second of the game in the 72nd minute.

On Saturday the Gaels beat the Ryerson Rams (3-8-1) in Toronto. Almeida, Lidia Bradau and Laura Callender scored for Queen’s.

MEN’S HOCKEY

The Queen’s Gaels men’s hockey team earned a split in their opening weekend, beating the Ottawa Gee-Gees 4-2 on Sunday after losing 4-3 to the Carleton Ravens a day earlier.

A timely goal by Harrison Hendrix helped lift the Gaels to their first win, while Eric Ming had his second straight two-goal game. Slater Doggett added an empty-netter while Jacob Brennan made 22 saves.

Doggett also scored on Saturday, set up by Ming, who had three points on the day.

Kevin Bailie finished with 33 saves.
