A quick roundup of Queen's Gaels teams in action over the weekend:

FOOTBALL

The Queen’s Gaels (0-2) dropped a heartbreaker in Ottawa 14-13 to the No. 9 Ottawa Gee-Gees (2-0) in OUA football on Monday.

On a rainy day both teams struggled to move the ball but the Gaels built up a 9-3 lead at the half on three field goals by Nick Liberatore.

After the break, the Queen’s defence continued to make big plays as Cam Lawson and Nick Dowd each picked up sacks. Liberatore was able to pin the Gee-Gees in their endzone with a punt that resulted in a tackle in the endzone for a single point putting Queen’s up 10-3.

Ottawa replied early in the fourth quarter with a field goal and a single point but Liberatore added another field goal to stretch the lead to 13-7.

However, on the resulting kick-off, Ottawa’s Jackson Bennett returned the ball 99-yards for a touchdown. A successful conversion gave Ottawa their first lead of the game with just over a minute remaining and the hosts held on the rest of the way.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

The No. 5 Queen’s Gaels (2-0-0) opened their season with a pair of wins at Richardson Stadium, topping the Laurentian Voyageurs 3-1 on Saturday and following up with a 4-2 win over the Nipissing Lakers on Sunday.

The Gaels got goals from Alexandra Doane, Rachel Radu and Jenny Wolever before the visitors added a late goal.

On Sunday, the Gaels were trailing 2-1 at the half, with Laura Callender finding the back of the Lakers net. But after the break it was all Queen’s with goals coming from Doane, Taylor Green and Matija Skoko.

MEN’S SOCCER

The Queen’s Gaels (2-1-0) picked up a pair of wins in OUA men’s soccer, beating the Laurentian Voyageurs 1-0 on Saturday and the Nipissing Lakers 3-1, with both games at Richardson Stadium.

On Saturday, the Gaels picked up a penalty kick in the opening seconds and Jacob Schroeter beat the Laurentian goalkeeper for the game’s only goal.

On Sunday the Gaels fell behind to an early goal but roared back with a pair of strikes from Schroeter and Inaki Hew, who scored on a free kick at the halfline.

MEN’S RUGBY

The Queen’s Gaels (1-0) kicked off their 2017 season on the road at the Trent Excalibur (0-1) on Monday afternoon and won in a rout 60-0.

A total of seven Gaels finished the game with tries, led by Nicholas DeLallo who had three and Michael Douros with two. The Gaels converted on five of their 10 tries.
