Room 340 in Richardson Hall has been formally named in honour of former Alberta premier and Queen’s Chancellor Peter Lougheed (LLD ’96). At a small weekend celebration on campus, Joe Lougheed unveiled a plaque to commemorate his father, who served as Queen’s Chancellor from 1996-2002. Mr. Lougheed passed away on September 13, 2012 at the age of 84. 

“My father always had a great deal of passion for Queen’s,” Joe Lougheed (Artsci ’88) said. “He believed strongly in the values and traditions of this place and I know he was thrilled to serve as the University’s Chancellor for a period. Having a room on campus named in his honour is a perfect tribute. It means a great deal to me and to my entire family.”

Mr. Lougheed, who was recently named as the best premier of the last 40 years by the Institute for Research on Public Policy, led Alberta from 1971-1985. He was a staunch defender of province’s interests, helping Alberta to attain its current status as an economic powerhouse.

More than 35 people attended the dedication ceremony in Richardson Hall, including Barbara Palk, the Chair of the Board of Trustees, and Principal Daniel Woolf, who both made opening remarks.

“I still remember that the first time I met Peter Lougheed, he asked me to call him by his first name,” recalled Principal Woolf. “It was a gesture that truly exemplified both his personal modesty and his great warmth.”

Principal Woolf highlighted the fact that the former Chancellor will now have permanent status in one of the central buildings at Queen’s.

“We will certainly miss his presence on campus, as both Alberta and Canada will miss one of its greatest leaders, but I am so pleased that we will be able to remember our former Chancellor every time we gather around the table in The Peter Lougheed Room.”
