High school students in flood-ravaged parts of Alberta will not have their acceptance to Queen’s jeopardized by the fact that they have not been able to write final provincial exams.

“We are deeply concerned about the devastating flooding in Calgary and Southern Alberta, and about its impact on our incoming students and our alumni community,” says Principal Daniel Woolf. “With so many already coping with being evacuated from their homes, the last thing students need is the pressure of worrying about the impact of cancelled exams on the status of their university acceptance.”

Students in Alberta traditionally cap off high school with rigorous provincial exams worth 50 per cent of their final grade in most courses. With schools in Calgary and the surrounding area closed due to severe flooding, Alberta Education has exempted students in key geographical areas from writing the diploma exams, and will instead calculate final marks based on school assigned grades. Alberta Education has made writing the provincial diploma exams optional if students wish to travel to open schools to write the exams.

Queen’s has notified the members of our incoming undergraduate class from Alberta that we will accept either their final course grades as they are calculated by their individual schools or their blended school/provincial exam grades – whichever is to the student’s advantage.
