Queen's University professor Christopher Simpson has been elected as the nominee for Canadian Medical Association (CMA) president-elect. He will officially become head of the largest association of doctors in Canada in August 2014.
"I am absolutely delighted to have been successful in the election for CMA president-elect," says Dr. Simpson. "I am very confident in the capacity of Canada's physicians to be leaders and solutions-providers, and I look forward to helping to lead the transformation of our health care system into one that is truly worthy of Canadians' confidence and trust. Our patients deserve only the very best. Together with our partners in the other health professions, hospital and community health care leaders, policy experts, scientists, patients, and governments, we will work diligently to achieve this goal."
Dr. Simpson is Chief of Cardiology at Queen's and Medical Director of the Cardiac Program at Kingston General Hospital/Hotel Dieu. He built his campaign around a call for physicians to embrace what he calls civic professionalism - to provide exemplary leadership at an uncertain time for health care. He has also built a strong career with a focus on public policy, particularly access to health care and the referral process between family doctors and specialists.
