Film and theatre are two distinct forms of performance; however, they overlap enough to interest students to want to study both areas.

“Film only covers a little more than one hundred years,” says Craig Walker, head of the Drama Department. “Drama, on the other hand, covers thousands of years. So the program makes both subjects available, but they involve different kinds of depth in learning.”

The Drama and Film Studies Departments at Queen’s partnered in the late 1990s to provide students with the opportunity to study both of these concentrations in depth. Students in the Stage and Screen Studies Special Field Concentration learn how each art form interacts with the other by taking selected courses from each department as well as courses from either the Department of Art or the School of Music.

The Stage and Screen Visiting Artist is another important learning resource for students. Professionals working in theatre, film and television come to Queen’s and share their experience and insight. Paul Gross, a notable actor, director, writer and producer, is this year’s visiting artist.

“He’s genuinely a star of both theatre and film,” says Dr. Walker. “He’s the perfect version of the stage and screen artist.”

Mr. Gross will visit the university on Tuesday, March 5 and Wednesday, March 6. During that time, he will visit some of the drama and film classes, and will attend a meet-and-greet and question and answer session with Queen’s students.
