Students looking for ways to get involved in extracurricular activities on and off campus can now find them easily using a new online directory.

“Learning experiences that take place outside the classroom play a significant role in the personal, social and academic development of many students,” says Ann Tierney, Vice-Provost and Dean of Student Affairs. “There are hundreds of opportunities out there, and our new Co-Curricular Opportunities Directory (CCOD) will help students find the best fit for their personal goals.”

All undergraduate and graduate students can access the directory. They can look for specific activities or search by learning outcomes, type of activity or time commitment.

“There is a lot of information on various websites for societies and clubs. The directory centralizes those opportunities and makes it easier for students to get involved and make the most of their Queen’s experience,” says Rico Garcia (Artsci’13), President, Queen’s Student Alumni Association (QSAA).

The CCOD also provides students with tools to describe the skills they develop during the co-curricular activity. The ability to describe their experience will help them in meetings with prospective employers or with their applications for graduate or professional school.

The directory already contains more than 200 entries and more are being added daily. Groups can advertise their on-campus or campus-affiliated extracurricular activity if the activity:

• provides meaningful learning and skill development
• isn’t required for academic credit
• and isn’t a SWEP or work study position.

Student Affairs’ Student Experience Office (SEO) and Career Services, along with the Alma Mater Society (AMS), the Arts and Science Undergraduate Society and the QSAA, collaborated to develop the CCOD. The group is now working with the Society of Graduate and Professional Students (SGPS) and others to continually expand the directory.

The SEO is launching the directory at the AMS Winter Clubs Night on January 16 from 6-10 pm in the Queen’s Centre.
