Flags on campus are lowered in memory of retired faculty member David Bacon (Chemical Engineering).

Dr. Bacon was a well-respected teacher, researcher and administrator. He was a professor in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science for more than 30 years. He served as dean of the faculty from 1980-1991. 

As a researcher, Dr. Bacon was a leader in statistical techniques for quality monitoring and improvement, and statistical estimation of mathematical models for improving manufacturing operations. He was a leader -- well ahead of his time -- in integrating statistics ideas in engineering education.

He retired in August 1999 and continued as an emeritus professor. He became an active member of the Retirees Association of Queen’s (RAQ). Dr. Bacon served most recently on RAQ’s pension and benefits committee.

In 1998, Dr. Bacon received the Queen’s Distinguished Service Award, an honour that recognizes individuals who have made the university a better place through their extraordinary contributions. His citation for the award stated, among other things, that Dr. Bacon’s “teaching insights and innovations keep on giving generations of engineering graduates the Queen’s competitive advantage.” He was also recognized for advancing higher education and research in Canada through his contributions to many national councils and committees.
