Description:

Dr. David Ben Shannon will be hosting a talk with the Arts Infusion Committee in collaboration with the Centre for Community Engagement and Social Change entitled “Music Research-Creation: Speculative Propositions and Transdisciplinary Failures.”

This seminar will speak to the methodological potentials and challenges of music composition as a research-creation practice. Research-creation is the feminist curation of practices from across the bounds of multiple disciplines: in his research, Dr. Shannon mobilises this curation across music composition, empirical social science methods, early years classroom practice, and electrodermal biosensors. Dr. Shannon will discuss the possibilities of conducting transdisciplinary research like this in early childhood settings but also discuss the various challenges that it presents. This seminar is for scholars or graduate students interested in arts-based methods, research-creation, or transdisciplinary research.

Description:

On Monday, April 8 a rare phenomenon will occur in parts of North America: a total solar eclipse. During its peak, known as totality, observers can expect darkness and distinct effects such as drops in temperature, unique shadows, and changes in animal behaviour. For the first time since 1349, Kingston is in the eclipse’s path, with activity set to begin at 2:09 pm and end at 4:34 pm. 

A total solar eclipse is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for everyone fortunate enough to be in its path. And Kingston’s geographical location is a prime vantage point for viewing. 

On Queen’s campus

For students, faculty, and staff who are on campus on April 8, Tindall Field and the adjacent parking lot are designated as the official on-campus viewing area for the Queen’s community. Research experts and Eclipse Ambassadors will be on-site from 1:00 to 5:00 pm to facilitate the exciting experience by pointing out phenomena, leading a countdown, and ensuring viewing safety. Eclipse glasses will be available on-site.

No chairs, food, or beverages other than water are permitted on Tindall Field, as they can damage the surface. They are permitted in the adjacent parking lot. Campus food retail locations will be open on the day of the eclipse.

Ensure you're prepared

Free ISO-certified eclipse glasses are still available on campus for students, faculty, and staff (one pair per person; Queen’s ID required). Glasses will also be available at the viewing event.

Description:

This is a special celebration hosted by Queen's School of Computing, featuring demos of video games, digital art projects, augmented reality experiences, and research visualizations prepared by computing capstone teams.

The event will include a live Twitch stream featuring interviews with the video game creators.

Everyone is welcome to drop in to see the installations, try out the hands-on demos, and chat with our students about their work.

The Creative Computing Showcase is a large-scale demonstration of different applications of computing as a discipline, spanning from design to environmental and medical applications of technology.

Join us at the BioSciences Complex on April 4th, from 11am-2pm to experience new and cutting edge applications of what art, technology, and computing have to offer!

Dare to Dream 2024

Receive up to $15k in funding

The Dare to Dream Program through Centre for Entrepreneurship, Innovation & Social Impact (CEISI) at Smith School of Business is designed to encourage and enable entrepreneurs in launching their new ventures. The program is specifically focused on providing critical resources to help Smith graduates turn their new venture business plans into reality. Each award provides up to a total of $15,000 over a three month period.

Many students create new ventures while in their program, yet upon graduation, they are faced with a tough dilemma: take a full-time job in order to pay for rent and/or student loans and sacrifice the opportunity to bring their business to fruition versus pursuing their entrepreneurial dreams while bootstrapping to make ends meet.

The Dare to Dream Program was created to make it possible for graduates to pursue the latter, by not only covering expenses, but also providing other critical resources such as space and access to the invaluable Queen’s network of contacts.

Eligibility

Founders/Co-Founders must be in their final year of study for a degree or diploma program at Smith School of Business or have graduated from a Smith program in the Fall of the previous year.

Today’s rapid pace of economic, technological and social change, however, poses interpretation and application challenges for preparers and users of financial information, as accounting standards often lag behind such transformations.  

It is essential to understand how to apply standards in a dynamic environment and to identify resources that can be used to stay on top of how standards are interpreted.  

On Thursday, April 25 at 12 p.m. (ET) join Smith Business Insight and the CPA Ontario Centre for Corporate Reporting and Professionalism for this free and practical 60-minute webinar on accounting standards. Dominique Hamel (principal, Accounting Standards Board) moderates the discussion featuring experts: Armand Capisciolto (chair, Accounting Standards Board), Fiona Bentham (director of corporate accounting and accounting policy, Telus Corporation) and Chris Kovalchuk (portfolio manager, Claret Asset Management). Smith School of Business associate accounting professor Bertrand Malsh is the webinar host.

Join Dr. Juuso Nieminen in a dialogue about inclusive assessment practices.

Dr. Nieminen’s work examines the prevailing notion that assessment accommodations can unfairly advantage some students, potentially leading to academic dishonesty. Through a detailed policy analysis (Nieminen, J. & Eaton, S., 2023), primarily within the Canadian educational landscape, Dr. Nieminen will shed light on how current practices and policies might not fully support the inclusion they aim to provide.

Dr. Nieminen’s upcoming visit to Queen's University presents a timely opportunity for faculty to engage in dialogue on how to better design and implement assessment accommodations, aligning with the goals of equity and integrity in higher education.
