Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada

Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon was sworn in on July 26, 2021, as Canada’s first Indigenous governor general. She is the 30th governor general since Confederation.

Mary Simon was born on August 21, 1947, in Kangiqsualujjuaq, Nunavik (Quebec), to Nancy May (Angnatuk-Askew), her Inuk mother, and Bob Mardon May, her father, who moved to the Arctic to work for the Hudson’s Bay Company.

Ms. Simon gained national and international recognition for her work on Arctic and Indigenous issues and for her efforts in advocating for Inuit rights, youth, education and culture.

Ms. Simon began her career as a radio broadcaster with the CBC Northern Service (now CBC North) in the 1970s. Following this, she held a series of executive positions with the Northern Quebec Inuit Association (now Makivik Corporation) and Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, which centred on negotiating the first land claims agreement in Canada, the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement. As president of Makivik Corporation, she was directly involved with the implementation of the agreement, along with the protection and promotion of Inuit rights.

Lecture 6: Dr. Jennifer Matsunaga on navigating the academy and settler colonialism in the classroom.

Jennifer Matsunaga graduated with a Ph.D. in Sociology from Queen’s in 2019. Currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work at the University of Ottawa, unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg, Dr. Matsunaga's interdisciplinary research examines reparations for historical injustices in the context of settler states with a particular focus on Canada. Rooted in her lived experience as a sansei or third generation Japanese Canadian, the stories of her family’s and community’s internment and redress motivate much of her work. She is an active member of numerous academic and community-based committees dealing with questions of decolonization, anti-racism and social justice.

Dr. Yongmei Lu: Gentrification as Perceived and Experienced

Dr. Yongmei Lu: Gentrification as Perceived and Experienced

When:
Wednesday, March 23, 2022
3:30 PM – 5:00 PM
Where:
Description:

DR. YONGMEI LU: Gentrification as Perceived and Experienced –Examining the Health of the Gentrified

Gentrification refers to the process of urban neighborhood change due to influx of more affluent people and households. It is usually accompanied by increase in rent, shifts in neighborhood demographic characteristics, and reshaping of economic and cultural landscape. Although gentrification may be considered as a stage of urban development, it is often controversial for urban politics and planning when the well-being of the gentrified is concerned. For a gentrified neighborhood and the people who live through the process, gentrification is an issue of housing, culture, and health. Looking through a social justice lens, Dr. Lu argues for a people-centered framework when examining the exposure to gentrification and its health impacts. This seminar talk will also discuss empirical findings on health impacts of gentrification in the east part of Austin, Texas
