Understanding Authoritarianism Why Dictators Get Worse Over Time

Description

Kaushik Basu
Professor of Economics and Carl Marks Professor of International Studies
Cornell University

The rise of authoritarian leaders around the world has given rise to a host of questions about the genesis of the power of such leaders, how they quell dissent and why such leaders often morph into tyrants. We also have examples of political leaders who come to power with genuine interest in doing good and curbing corruption but end up perpetuating the very ills that they wanted to cure. These questions and themes go far back into history but there is a resurgence of interest in them. The aim of this lecture will be to address some these urgent questions of our time by drawing on contemporary methods of analysis. The lecture will also speculate about the scope for creating constitutions and institutions that curb authoritarianism.

Queen's Policy Talks Lecture - IAN GARNER - The Z Generation: How are Russians engaging in Putin’s Ukraine invasion?

Queen's Policy Talks Lecture - IAN GARNER - The Z Generation: How are Russians engaging in Putin’s Ukraine invasion?

When:

Where:

Description:

The Z Generation: How are Russians engaging in Putin’s Ukraine invasion?

Speaker:
Ian Garner

Commenters across the West are vexed by the question “To what extent do Russians really support Putin’s invasion of Ukraine?” Alarming videos of mass rallies, social media campaigns, and opinion polling have led some to identify the Ukraine invasion as the tipping point that will see the emergence of a new, highly motivated generation of fascistic Russians. By comparing today’s state-organized social movements with those of the late Soviet era, I will attempt to separate the phenomena of “engagement” – genuine conviction – and “engagingness” – pantomime fealty – in today’s Russia. Finally, I'll ask: what comes next for Putin's citizens and propagandists?

Ian Garner’s research interest is in cultures of Russian and Soviet propaganda. He has written for outlets including Foreign Policy, the Washington Post, and the Calvert Journal. His first book, Stalingrad Lives! Stories of Combat and Survival (McGill-Queen’s UP, 2022) explores how the USSR’s leading prose writers created an enduring myth of Stalingrad at the front in 1942-3. Garner graduated with a PhD from the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Toronto in 2017 after studying at the University of Bristol (England) and St. Petersburg State Conservatory (Russia). He has taught Russian language, literature, history, and politics at the university level.

Mary Simon was born on August 21, 1947, in Kangiqsualujjuaq, Nunavik (Quebec), to Nancy May (Angnatuk-Askew), her Inuk mother, and Bob Mardon May, her father, who moved to the Arctic to work for the Hudson’s Bay Company.

Ms. Simon gained national and international recognition for her work on Arctic and Indigenous issues and for her efforts in advocating for Inuit rights, youth, education and culture.

Ms. Simon began her career as a radio broadcaster with the CBC Northern Service (now CBC North) in the 1970s. Following this, she held a series of executive positions with the Northern Quebec Inuit Association (now Makivik Corporation) and Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, which centred on negotiating the first land claims agreement in Canada, the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement. Lecture 6: Dr. Jennifer Matsunaga on navigating the academy and settler colonialism in the classroom.

This online Zoom lecture series centres speakers' diverse experiences navigating the challenging world of academia, finding opportunities within and beyond postsecondary institutions, and carving space for themselves and others in their fields.

Jennifer Matsunaga graduated with a Ph.D. in Sociology from Queen’s in 2019. Currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work at the University of Ottawa, unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg, Dr. Matsunaga's interdisciplinary research examines reparations for historical injustices in the context of settler states with a particular focus on Canada. Rooted in her lived experience as a sansei or third generation Japanese Canadian, the stories of her family’s and community’s internment and redress motivate much of her work. She is an active member of numerous academic and community-based committees dealing with questions of decolonization, anti-racism and social justice.
