Measuring Social Impact

Measuring Social Impact

When:
Wednesday, April 20, 2022
12:00 PM – 1:00 PM
Where:
Description:

What impact do you want to make? How do you know that your organization is making a difference? This session provides some pointers on measuring your impact and walking you through the importance of communicating your impact in a visual way using a Logic Model.

Having this data allows you to demonstrate what you are capable of to funders, make informed business decisions, and celebrate what you have achieved. Attendees will receive tools and resources designed for building a culture and sustainable practice around impact tracking.

By the end of this event you will understand common foundations as the minimum standard for the "how" of impact measurement; get familiar with the logic model and become equipped to create your own; and learn how to align your work with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The 4th annual Dr. Malcolm Peat Lectureship presents: Community-based rehabilitation lecture with the Dr. Malcolm Peat visiting lecturer, Huib Cornielje

The Dr. Malcolm Peat Lectureship was established in memory and recognition of former Queen's School of Rehabilitation Therapy Director and founder of the International Centre for Advancement of Community Based Rehabilitation (ICACBR), Dr. Malcolm Peat. This year, the lecture is partnered with the Queen’s Lecture Series. The Queen’s Lecture Series showcases several donor-funded lectures from across the university throughout the year and provides alumni and the broader Queen’s community with increased access to some of the university’s top researchers and internationally respected visiting scholars.

Huib Cornielje is a Dutch physiotherapist who developed a comprehensive CBR program in the 1980s during his time as rehabilitation manager at a rural hospital in South Africa. As head of the training unit of the Institute of Urban Primary Health Care (IUPHC) in Alexandra township, he initiated an urban CBR program in the 1990s. Since 1999 he has served as director of Enablement Ltd., which focuses on capacity building, research, and innovation in the disability-inclusive development sector. He holds a Masters of Science and was senior lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences Leiden.

Ingenuity Labs Guest Lecture: Alexander Badri-Spröwitz: An emu-inspired robot with mechanical joint coordination and toe

Ingenuity Labs Guest Lecture: Alexander Badri-Spröwitz: An emu-inspired robot with mechanical joint coordination and toe

When:
Friday, April 29, 2022
1:00 PM – 2:00 PM
Where:
Description:

An emu-inspired robot with mechanical joint coordination and toe-triggered clutching action for energy efficient legged locomotion (BirdBot robot)

To  join zoom meeting, please contact Kate at ingenuity.labs@queensu.ca

Abstract

In nature, we observe gigantism in legged animals, for example in extinct bipedal animals such as the t-rex dinosaur. The fact that biped animals with multiple tons bodyweight walked across earth proves to us that legged locomotion - also legged robot locomotion - has at least one solution that is scalable to large body sizes and weights. The engineering of legged robots is challenging; we design mechanisms that are energy-efficient, lightweight, carry high loads, and function robustly during numerous operational cycles. Ideally, the mechanical design supports simple control. If we aim to build robots that support us in our every day, we need to improve the energy efficiency and scalability of existing leg designs. Legged robots' actuators draw power when loads change rapidly to support the robot’s mass during stance, and when cycling the leg’s state between stance and swing phases. Here, we demonstrate an emu- and ostrich-inspired robot leg design, BirdBot.

PhD-Community Initiative Capstone

PhD-Community Initiative Capstone

Tuesday, April 12, 2022
4:00 PM – 6:00 PM
Where:
Online event
Find on Campus Map
Description:

The PhD-Community Initiative brings together PhD students from different programs of study into inter-disciplinary teams of 3 to 5 members, partnering them with community organizations to assist in addressing a particular issue or challenge of importance to them.  This year, six teams worked with a diverse group of partners, including the City of Kingston, Elginburg Public School, Little Forest Kingston, the Royal Kingston Curling Club, Ottawa-based ABLE2, and the School of Graduate Studies. Projects ranged from an examination of the impact of forest school programs on children, to a toolkit for students to measure climate resilience in their community, and to volunteer recruitment and community engagement strategies.
Our students have demonstrated talent, energy, and enthusiasm to create positive change by applying the skills and knowledge gained in graduate studies to addressing challenges beyond the academic arena. Please join us to celebrate their work and hear more about the real impact they are having on the community here in Kingston and beyond.
Please RSVP online by Friday, April 8 so we can provide you with details on how to join this remote event in advance. I encourage you to share this with your colleagues or anyone in your network you think would be interested.
