Description:

Doors Open is a one-day event for students from equity deserving communities to learn about existing resources and supports across campus and meet with relevant staff and service providers. 

Participating offices include Yellow House Student Centre for Equity and Inclusion, Four Directions Indigenous Student Centre, Queen’s University International Centre, Faith & Spiritual Life, Athletics & Recreation, Student Wellness Services, Queen’s Student Accessibility Services and Health Promotion who offer services and supports for Black, Indigenous, 2SLGBTQ+, international and disabled students/students with a disability, students from minority religious or faith groups, and students of colour. 

Join us at University & Union (in front of Douglas Library) between 9am and 4pm to receive a Doors Open map, virtual resource booklet and a treat (while they last)!  

No registration required. All students welcome.

Canaries and Coal Mines – the ER as ultimate healthcare performance metric

Lecturer: 
Dr. David M.C.Walker, Professor, Department of Family Medicine and School of Policy Studies

Dr. Walker is a Professor in the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Family Medicine in the School of Medicine and Professor in the School of Policy Studies at Queen's University. He is a member of the Consultant Staff at Kingston Health Sciences Centre.

A career in academic Emergency Medicine at Queen’s and Kingston Health Sciences Centre led to roles as associate, vice-dean and, from 1999-2010, dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Director of the Medical School and CEO of the Southeast Academic Medical Organization (SEAMO).

Dr. Walker has been President of the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians, President of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, Chair of the Council of Ontario Faculties of Medicine and served government (by order in council) as Chair, Expert Panel on SARS and Infectious Disease Control, as inaugural Board Chair of the Ontario Agency for Health Promotion and Protection (Public Health Ontario) and as advisor to Ministers of Health on policy areas concerning Public Health and Aging.

This is a free, public event that will be available to in-person audiences and via Zoom for online viewers.

Lecturer:
Melissa S. Kearney, Neil Moskowitz Professor of Economics at the University of Maryland

Melissa S. Kearney is the Neil Moskowitz Professor of Economics at the University of Maryland. She is also Director of the Aspen Economic Strategy Group; a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER); and a non-resident Senior Fellow at Brookings. She is a scholar affiliate and member of the board of the Notre Dame Wilson-Sheehan Lab for Economic Opportunities (LEO) and a scholar affiliate of the MIT Abdul Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL). She is an editorial board member of the American Economic Journal: Economic Policy and Journal of Economic Literature, and a former co-editor of the Journal of Human Resources and Senior Editor of the Future of Children. She serves on the Board of MDRC and the Board of Governors of the Smith Richardson Foundation. Kearney served as Director of the Hamilton Project at Brookings from 2013-2015 and as co-chair of the JPAL State and Local Innovation Initiative from 2015-2018. Kearney's academic research focuses on domestic policy issues, especially issues related to social policy, poverty, and inequality.
