Where:
Virtual Webinar (Zoom)

Description:

Individuals suffering from mental disorders often feel distant from friends and loved ones and can find it difficult to perform to their maximum productivity in the workplace. In fact, mental health issues are growing at a faster rate than any other kind of disability in today’s workplace. This situation is exacerbated by the stigma that still exists around mental disorders and the reluctance to discuss it openly at home or at work. In this seminar, participants will be encouraged to shatter popular myths and misconceptions about mental health and to increase their understanding of the causes and symptoms of mental disorders.

Introduction into Mindfulness (Webinar)

Introduction into Mindfulness (Webinar)

When:
Wednesday, April 26, 2023
10:00 AM – 11:00 AM
Where:
Virtual Webinar (Zoom)
Find on Campus Map
Description:

The modern workplace can be a chaotic environment that contributes to high levels of stress. When feeling overwhelmed, we tend to ruminate and go into “autopilot” mode. Over time, a mind-body disconnect occurs and our innate capacity for self-awareness, self-regulation and self-care decreases.

As individuals, if we don’t manage this effectively, we begin to lose appreciation for our unique aptitudes and capabilities. This can have a negative impact on our morale and our physical well-being. When not managed effectively in organizations, these factors lead to a decrease in workplace performance and a decline in productivity and morale.

Your employer cares about you and your organization, and that’s why they are offering this Introduction to Mindfulness. Mindfulness teaches us to bring our attention to what is occurring in the present moment and observe our reactions in a non-judgmental way. This allows us to become more aware of our physical and mental perceptions. This awareness also lets us recognize habitual behaviours and choose more effective
responses. Over time, this strengthens our emotional resilience and emotional intelligence.

Mindfulness training can bring about remarkable changes in the workplace, benefitting not only those who attend the training. It has a ripple effect that can extend to the entire organization.

SCREENING: Rendering Pyramids

SCREENING: Rendering Pyramids

When:
Thursday, March 30, 2023
2:30 PM – 4:00 PM
Where:
Isabel Bader Centre 222
Room: 222
Find on Campus Map
Description:

Video and digital media occupy a huge space in visual arts production in Brazil as well as globally. The supposed ease of use and cheapness of technologies such as mobile phones and computers – certainly stimulated by the social distancing effected by the COVID-19 pandemic – increasingly encourage artists with diverse interests to explore moving images. Distant, however, from the more documental uses of the camera, either recording their bodies in action or looking at the “other” in dialogue with cinema, artists who create images using software are usually immersed in fantasy, fiction and, not rarely, literature. All the artists here, coming not only from different regions of Brazil but also from a broad generational bracket, are interested in the notion of ancestry, antiquity, history, and the past.

The pyramids of Egypt are one of the greatest symbols of particular ideas of antiquity and notions of ancestry. By placing them alongside rendering, a verb used to designate the moment when editing, creating, and processing images using software becomes an actual piece of work, I propose an encounter between different temporalities that rub against each other.“Rendering Pyramids” is therefore a video program that gathers artists who deal with the digital to reflect on how to fold, shape, invent, fragment, and even implode fictional charges from the “past” with both feet in the present and through a visual culture that, in the blink of an eye, could still be called “futuristic.”

WORKSHOP: Curating in a transhistorical perspective - frictions from the Global South

WORKSHOP: Curating in a transhistorical perspective - frictions from the Global South

When:
Wednesday, April 5, 2023
2:30 PM – 5:30 PM
Where:
Ontario Hall
Room: #210
Find on Campus Map
Description:

The Film & Media Department will be hosting Raphael Fonseca, one of the curators of this year's Videobrasil Biennale, for a workshop and presentation/screening.

This workshop discusses possibilities of curating in a transhistorical perspective, focusing on artists and spaces from the Global South. How can curators generate friction between this South and the hegemonic North? How to create conversations between artists, images, and institutions that are separated not only historically but also geographically, as seen under the prism of a "Global South"? The activity is underpinned on the discussion of a series of moving image works. After exploring these works collectively, participants will receive one of them to use as the basis for a fictional curatorial program that creates connections between images distant from each other in time. In a week's time, participant will present their programs to the group. The workshop is meant to be an engaging - and, of course, fun - experience to explore our ability to create relations, propose projects, respond to specific artworks, and deal creatively with emerging cultural conditions.

Please fill out the following form to register: https://forms.gle/gjcC1PMVgrtRYSZk7

Towards a Local History in the Seleucid Empire: Sealings and Lives of Maresha.

Taking at its core the Idumean city of Maresha in modern-day southern Israel, this paper investigates local life in the Hellenistic Levant. The Hellenistic empires, and the political changes of the second century in particular, transformed the region markedly. But did these imperial changeovers affect the life of individuals in the local communities? By contextualising a private archive from Hellenistic Maresha within the archaeology of the region, this paper begins to trace the impact of empire on the ground of this particular city.
