Originality, AI, and the Aims of Education

Since the introduction of ChatGPT, educators have been scrambling to adapt their methods of assessment, especially in subject areas where original written text is the default for proof of learning. I consider the purchased essay as a paradigm example of low-tech cheating to illustrate how originality has been used as a rough stand-in for academic integrity. While originality in some form remains a necessary benchmark for academic work, it was already a flawed standard, which AI stands to obviate entirely. I analyze the value of originality to show how Large Language Models like ChatGPT challenge the meaning of our unreflective educational values. Adapting assessment to fit the age of generative AI requires revisiting fundamental questions about the aims of education and the meaning of learning.
