Maker Education: The Promise and Problems

In this presentation, Dr. Hughes, Canada Research Chair in Technology & Pedagogy, will provide an overview of the maker movement and its impact on elementary schools across Ontario. Working in collaboration with the Ontario Ministry of Education and the Council of Ontario Directors of Education, Hughes has worked with 20 different school districts to design, establish and evaluate makerspaces and maker pedagogies in K-8 settings. She will discuss the benefits for students, as well as the barriers and challenges of implementing maker pedagogies in formal educational contexts.
