Department of Philosophy Colloquium Series - Dr. Nigel DeSouza
4:00 PM – 6:00 PM
The Department of Philosophy Colloquium Series presents
Dr. Nigel DeSouza (University of Ottawa)
“Pre-reflective ethical know-how”
“Pre-reflective ethical know-how” is the central concept in my research project into how human beings become ethical agents. It was developed through a critical engagement with Hubert Dreyfus’ writings on the phenomenology of expertise as applied to ethics, in which he speaks of “everyday ongoing ethical coping” and “ethical expertise”. I contend that pre-reflective ethical know-how develops in individuals first and is proto-conceptual in nature, and that all later forms of ethical expertise, as well as our reflective ethical concepts, are dependent on it. I will aim to present this nascent project (aspects of which have been previously published) and where I am at now in my conception of it.
