Marcus Baron Young is a Doctor of Philosophy student in Cultural Studies at Queen’s University whose research interests are rooted in visual culture and masculinity. For his master’s thesis, he studied the nature of masculinity and its tactile qualities through the nude photographs by George Platt Lynes (1907-1955), American fashion photographer for Vogue and other high-culture magazines. Under the mentorship of Dr Suzanne van de Meerendonk, Bader Curator of European Art, and Dr Jennifer Kennedy, Assistant Professor in Art History and Art Conservation, Young’s doctoral research inquires how critical practices of spectatorship, as methods of engagement, reveal novel meanings for historical artwork, particularly with Young’s focus on Dutch seventeenth-century religious painting.
