Joel Oliver-Cormier is a PhD candidate in Cultural Studies at Queen’s University. His multidisciplinary research brings together the fields of Indigenous and settler colonial studies; environmental humanities and ecocriticism; affect and sensory studies; and science fiction studies. In his dissertation, he uses recent works of environmentalist science fiction--from Indigenous and non-Indigenous authors and creators--as a means to think through the many ways in which climate change discourse is often oriented toward producing and securing settler colonial futurities. With this work, he aims to contribute to the growing body of scholarship that insists upon resolutely decolonial responses to climate change.
