Oded Haklai

Oded Haklai is a Professor in the Department of Political Studies. He has been at Queen’s since 2004, after completing his PhD at the University of Toronto. His research interests are broadly situated in the fields of comparative and international politics with a focus on inter-group relations in deeply divided societies. He has published a number of books and articles on issues of state-minority relations, democracy and ethnic conflict, and settlers and ethnoterritorial disputes. Most notable are: Palestinian Ethnonationalism in Israel (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2011), which won the Shapiro Award, Settlers in Contested Lands: Territorial Disputes and Ethnic Conflict (co-edited with Neophytos Loizides) (Stanford University Press, 2015), and Democratization and Ethnic Minorities: Conflict or Compromise? (co-edited with Jacques Bertrand) (Routledge, 2014). His articles have been published in diverse journals, such as Comparative Political Studies, International Studies Review, Canadian Journal of Political Science, Ethnic and Racial Studies, Nations and Nationalism, and Ethnopolitics. Since 2021, Haklai is also editor of the journal Israel Studies Review.  He is currently working on issues connected to population resettlements in disputed territories. The project is supported by a SSHRC Insight Grant.
