From where do we derive terms and concepts like ethnic, autochthonous or indigenous? How did the ancient Greeks construct their own identity and imagine that of others? This course builds on a broad survey of ethnic views in the ancient Greek world, primarily through the lens of myth and history, culture and religion. We explore how the Greeks conceptualised “Greekness” and its subsets, and how they perceived other cultures of the ancient world (in terms of models, topoi, stereotypes, etc.). By learning about how the ancient Greeks understood kinship and difference, we also continually reflect on the relevance of this study to contemporary issues and debates (race, colonialism, slavery, etc.).
