2012 Canada-China Field Course


In 2012, we made major adjustments to the China-Canada Field Course curriculum. By splitting the original single course into two separate 3-credit courses, the financial burden on students enrolled in this year’s field course was substantially alleviated. Students in 2012 could choose to take either Module 1 (in Canada) alone or both Module 1 and Module 2 (China) together. After the adjustment, eight Canadian students attended the Module 1, three of whom also attended Module 2 in China. Although below our expectations, the 2012 Field Course achieved significant growth in student enrollments compared to 2011 (only 3 Canada students applied for the 2011 Field Course, leading to cancellation of the China portion of the course). However, we made great progress in deepening collaboration with universities in China. In 2012, two more Chinese universities, Tongji University (Shanghai) and Beijing Normal University, became partners for the China portion of the Field Course, bring our total to four participating Chinese universities. Indeed, the Field Course is very popular in China. We received applications from 16 Chinese students this year and ultimately enrolled 13 due to challenges in limiting class size to ensure the best teaching environment.

Highlights of the Canada portion of the course was the visit by local Member of Parliament, Dr. Ted Tsu (Science Critic for the Liberal Party of Canada), The visit was featured on local TV. Students were also visited by the Kingston Chinese association.

Highlights of the China portion of the course: the class visited one of the most controversial hydro projects in China – XiaoNanHai, which was suspended later 2013.

The challenges met in running the course this year included extremely hot weather (over 40 C) travel in China in August, increasing the airfare costs, limiting Canadian enrollment for China portion of the course. This prompted us to change the structure of the course for subsequent years, alternating between China and Canada.

在2012年,我们对中加野外课程的安排做出了重大调整:将原本囊括加拿大和中国两部分的课程划分为两个模块,各3学分。这一举措使得参与课程的学生经济负担大为减轻。与课学生可以自由选择半程(加拿大部分)或者全程(加拿大+中国部分)参与。本次课程共有8名加拿大学生参与了前半程,其中有3名学生同时参加了后半程课程。尽管这一数字低于预期(2011年只有3名加拿大学生报名,导致中国部分课程被迫取消),其相对前一年仍有显著增长。2012年,我们与中方大学的合作有了长足的进步。我们新增了2所合作学校(同济大学和北京师范大学),使得我们在中国课程的合作伙伴增加到了4所。同时,该课程的影响力在中国逐渐扩大,深受学生的欢迎。我们收到了16位学生的报名,最终由于课程人数的限制,我们只接受了13名。

本次课程加拿大部分的亮点包括我们有幸邀请到了当地议会议员Ted Tsu博士,他对学生的采访登上了当地的电视媒体。同时金士顿华人协会也对我们的课程进行了造访。

而课程在中国部分的亮点则是对中国最具争议的小南海水利工程(2013年被搁置)的实地考察。

本次课程受到的挑战包括8月在课程中国部分期间的极端高温天气(超过40摄氏度),不断上涨的机票费用,有限的加拿大学生参与人数。这将促使我们对接下来的课程安排做出进一步的结构调整。
