Since 1970, our rigorous and well-focused two-year Master of Planning (M.PL.) program allows our students to develop the knowledge and skills they require to become leaders in the planning field and to meet the challenges of a rapidly evolving urban environment.
There are two components to the program: course work and a report/thesis, augmented by a summer term of professional/research experience. This two-year multidisciplinary program provides two options: 12 courses plus a thesis, and 14 courses plus a report. The course arrays are as follows: seven compulsory core courses (SURP 800, 812, 815, 817, 818, 819 and one of the compulsory project courses), three constrained elective courses in a designated area of concentration (including one methodological course, which is typically comprised of two independent skills modules), and two or four unconstrained electives depending on whether it is the thesis or report option. The summer between the first and second year is used in acquiring professional/research experience. The School has a rigorous internship program, with placements at all three levels of government and in the civil society sector and the private sector, as well as internationally. The final requirement is a Master's report or thesis, which is an in-depth research on a planning topic.
