Until taking up her residency at Queen’s University in January 2014, Barbara Martin was Director General Regional Prosperity and Global Security in the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development. In this role, among other things, she co-chaired with Russia the G20 Anti-Corruption Working Group, and led Canada’s participation in the G8 Accountability Working Group and the G8 Transparency Advisory Group. Previously, she has been Director General for the Middle East and North Africa, and Director General of the Afghanistan Task Force.
Barbara has experience in a wide range of international policy areas, including security (including peacekeeping and nuclear policies), economic, development, human rights, as well as on Canada’s multilateral engagement through the UN, NATO, NORAD, ASEAN, G8 and G20. She has also worked extensively on Canada-US relations. She has worked in various capacities in the Privy Council Office, including in the Foreign and Defence Policy Secretariat, and the Security and Intelligence Secretariat. Abroad, she haso served in Canada’s embassy in Manila, Philippines, as well as in Canada’s Delegation to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris, France.
