The General Office (Room 301) is open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.. On PMPA weekends administrative support is available in Room 301 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.. The School of Policy Studies is locked at 5:00 p.m. on weekdays and all day Saturday and Sunday unless an event is taking place within the building.
The front doors to Sutherland Hall are normally opened at 7:00 am and locked at 7:00 p.m. on weekdays. With the exception of PMPA weekends and occasional special events, the building is normally also locked on Saturdays and Sundays. Queen’s security staff conduct a security check each night.
Working alone always increases risk. We suggest that you avoid working alone, whenever possible, in the building. Work with a buddy or a group when in the building, or work in a public space such as the Library. If you are working alone outside normal business hours, we suggest that you:
The Student Lounge is located on the first floor (lower level) of the Policy Studies Building and is accessible after hours to those with a building key.
A number of small/breakout rooms are located on the first floor, off of the Student Lounge. Students can reserve a room by contacting Kathleen Umanetz in the General Office (Room 301) or by email.
Meeting rooms for larger groups (8-16 people) are also available for student use. Reservations can be made by contacting Kathleen Umanetz in the General Office (Room 301) or by email.
A number of meeting rooms (202, 212, 327, 329, 334 and 448) may be used to teleconferencing, with advance reservation of the room, telephone and line and an account code for billing all related charges. For more information, please contact Kathleen Umanetz in the General Office (Room 301) by email.
Business cards will be ordered, for those interested, in early October, for a fee of $10 for 50 cards and $15 for 100 cards. Payment can be made by cash or cheque made payable to Queen's University.
Each student is assigned an office during orientation. A key deposit of $35 is taken for the office and building keys ($25 of which is refundable when keys are returned). Replacement cost for lost keys will be $15/key. Refunds are done by cheque, mailed to the student at their forwarding address. Key deposits may be paid for by cash or cheque made payable to Queen's University.
Electronic Mail - Queen's students are all given a NetID and an @QueensU.ca account when they register at Queen's.
Internet - Both the School and the University post important and current information for students on the Internet. Do not overlook this resource for the latest news from the School and the University.
Mail - MPA and PMPA students are each assigned a mailbox in the student lounge on the first level. Notices from other students, announcements and graded papers will be distributed this way during the school year. Check your mailbox regularly.
Telephone Services - Students may use the telephone in the student lounge for out-going local and operator-assisted long distance calls. External calls cannot be received on this line. Calls cannot be charged to a calling card on this phone. Payphones in the foyer of the Policy Studies Building are available for local and long distance calls. The telephone on the Fifth Floor of the Policy Studies Building is for the use of Urban and Regional Planning students only. Please do not use this telephone.
The School has several laptops and data projectors that may be reserved in advance for faculty/staff/student use. All A/V equipment is allocated reserved on a first come, first served basis, by contacting Kathleen Umanetz in the General Office (Room 301) or by email. An instructor who requires a laptop and/or data projector on a continuing basis throughout the term should let Kathleen Umanetz know at the beginning of the term.
SPS students may reserve a laptop and data projector, if needed, on a short-term basis for classroom presentations or practice. This equipment should be booked under a faculty/instructor's name, class and time slot, and returned promptly at the end of the reservation period.
