Before you create a social media presence for your faculty or department, ensure that your social media efforts are part of your overall communications strategy. This means that before you decide to Tweet you should know what you're trying to accomplish, and why. Also, who is your audience and what do you want them to do? Is social media the best way to achieve your goal? For instance, if you simply want to promote an event or send out news about your department, a website or an eNewsletter might be a better choice for you.
