Queen's paves the way for China's top aspiring PhD students

Queen's has signed an agreement that will see some of China's most promising doctoral students study at the university.

The agreement was signed this week between Queen's and the China Scholarship Council in a ceremony in Beijing.

It will provide opportunities for students in China who wish to apply for PhD programs at Queen's, particularly in physical sciences, applied science and life sciences, to receive four years of funding support from the China Scholarship Council to cover most of the cost of their studies.

The China Scholarship Council is a government agency in China which provides scholarships to students for doctoral and postdoctoral studies abroad. The announcement about the agreement is available on the China Scholarship Council website.

"Both the students from China and researchers at Queen's will benefit from this agreement," said Janice Deakin, Associate Vice-Principal and Dean of the School of Graduate Studies. "Queen's is a highly research intensive institution and many of our researchers rely on having top quality graduate students. At the same time, graduate students from China will benefit greatly by learning with our world-class faculty."

Dr. Deakin and Dr. John Dixon, Associate Vice-Principal (Academic & International) were present for the ceremony. Dr. Dixon said that Queen's is fortunate to be part of such a prestigious agreement.

"The China Scholarship Council provides opportunities for China's top students, from that country's highest ranked universities, to study abroad. Queen's is pleased to be part of such an agreement and we hope to build on these positive efforts using this as a model."
