Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Development, maintenance and management of academic activities in the University;

  • Working with Associate Vice-Principals, Deans, University Registrar, the University Librarian, Directors and Department Heads in pursuit of Queen’s institutional mission;

  • Building and maintaining an appropriate complement of distinguished faculty;

  • Curriculum and program development across the University, as well as formal program reviews;

  • Chief university budget officer.

Alan Harrison became Queen's Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic) on August 1, 2011. 

Provost Harrison is a professor of economics, having graduated with a PhD from the University of Essex in England. He spent a year at Queen’s in the mid 1970s in the Department of Economics as a visiting scholar.

Before returning to Queen's, Alan Harrison was Provost and Vice-President (Academic) at the University of Calgary, a position he held since 2006.

Prior to joining the University of Calgary, he was Provost and Vice-President (Academic) at Carleton University.

Provost Harrison has held a variety of positions at McMaster University, including Dean of Social Sciences and Chair of the Department of Economics.
