In 2007, Queen' s opened a China Liaison Office in Shanghai and Dr. Zhiyao Zhang was appointed Liaison Officer.
In collaboration with relevant Queen's units, this Office acts as Queen's University's “store-front” in Shanghai and China, both in established relationships with Fudan University and other Chinese universities and organizations, and in developing new contacts and relationships with other institutions in China.
The incumbent is an “ambassador” of Queen's, supporting exchange programs and visits of both students and faculty (Canadian and Chinese) to ensure that each transition as smoothly as possible into another country.
The Office seeks out and supports opportunities to foster collaborative research and academic initiatives. The China-Liaison Office also researches secondary schools, with a view to recruiting students to study in degree programs at Queen's.
The Office is represented at alumni events in order to help foster Queen's connections with these groups.
Information about Queen' s many academic collaborations in China may be found on the Queen' s International site (see link at right), or on the websites of various faculties and departments engaged in academic and research collaborations in China.
Dr. Zhang was born and grew up in China and received his MA and PhD in Political Science at Jilin University. He taught at Jilin for a number of years and also served as Associate Dean of Political Studies there for three years. Subsequently, he held visiting fellowships at universities in the USA and England before moving to Canada. He has taught at the Royal Military College of Canada and at Queen's.
