Toronto Mayor Rob Ford ends diet amid national media coverage: Queen's University expert

Queen’s University political behavior expert Melanee Thomas is available to comment on Toronto mayor Rob Ford’s public decision to stop dieting. The end of the Cut The Waist Challenge, where Mayor Ford was looking to lose 50 pounds, has garnered national media attention.

“I would compare Ford to Michelle Obama,” says Dr. Thomas. “The weight of public officials isn't really relevant to the exercise of their jobs. Michelle Obama was critiqued unnecessarily for her diet while trying to engage in healthy initiatives for children for political reasons. In light of this, I think it's worth asking why we care about Ford's weight and diet.”

Dr. Thomas is a Skelton-Clark Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Queen’s Political Studies Department.
