New French president

Timothy Smith, Queen’s professor of history, is available to discuss France’s new president; the reasons for his win; and the future of the country.
“Mr. Sarkozy must now do a better job of persuading his opponents that without economic reform and the higher growth that will result, the social programs they cherish won't be sustainable in light of demographic pressures, medical inflation, and France's low rate of labour force participation,” says Dr. Smith.
Dr. Smith is the author of France in Crisis: Welfare, Inequality and Globalization since 1980 (Cambridge University Press, 2004).
